Our Sister company, A Hughes and Son (Skellingthorpe) Limited is one of the UK's oldest independent renderers. Established in Lincoln in 1926, it serves a UK-wide client base of food and drinks manufacturers, supermarket chains, retailers, abattoirs, cutting plants, local family butcher’s shops and farmers.
The company is fully licensed to handle Categories 1, 2 and 3 materials and former foodstuffs. It offers a full secure destruction and effluent treatment service and is a registered collector for UK farmers’ National Fallen Stock Scheme.

In partnership with our sister Company A Hughes and Son (Skellingthorpe) Limited, we can also offer a highly specialist disposal service for waste food of animal origin (ie. animal by-products) when they are no longer suitable for human consumption. Such products could be ready meals, sandwiches, meat pies etc that have been removed from sale because they are past their sell/use-by dates or have been damaged, soiled or contaminated.
The approved rendering facility located in Lincoln, can handle categories 1, 2 and 3 animal by-products in any form, in large or small tonnages; including recycling of all packaging wastes. Heavy investment in the latest energy efficient automated processing equipment that fully complies with the Animal By-Product Regulations and the plant is fully approved by DEFRA (animal health) and the Local Authority (environmental control). These automated processes for the efficient treatment of animal by-products and food waste also meets the stringent requirements of the UK and European Animal By-Product Regulations.
In the last 12 months, improved factory operations have ensured better quality, consistency, performance and a more energy efficient process to minimize the impact of the factory to the local environment.
In short, this meant building economic, environmental and social considerations into the factory restructure to achieve best value for money for our customers, whilst offering continual improvements in conserving resources, controlling pollution, reducing waste and raising the quality of people’s lives. A sustainably managed factory minimizes our use of energy, water and other resources through increased efficiency; controlling our emissions of greenhouse gases and other pollutants; and reducing waste in line with environmental targets
The disposal of bio-degradable liquids such as animal blood, wash down waters, effluent sludges, fish farm residues, soups and beverages via a process fully compliant with the EU Animal By-Product Regulations. We also operate a flexible system for a wide range of organic, biodegradable materials. Emissions from the factory process are monitored closely and no damage to local air quality is achieved through the combustion of malodorous process air.
Offering a UK wide collection service utilising a diverse fleet of modern vehicles of bin wagons, hook-lifts, bulk tippers, tankers, taut liners and skip vehicles (7.5 tonnes to 44 tonnes); all engines specified are Euro 4 and 5 which has the least impact on the environment.
The end result of the rendering process for solids produces protein meal which can either go for pet food and renewable energy. The fats are extracted during the rendering process, which results in tallow that either gets recycled into soap and organic chemicals, or again a carbon-neutral renewable energy source. Any extracted water is processed in our effluent treatment plant, which is then harvested and recycled for crop irrigation on local agricultural land.
